The disgraceful killing of the 31-year-old, as he debated his views on a university campus, is the latest example of how civic norms around political debate in the US have collapsed.

A politically polarised and heavily armed America is proving to be a deadly combination — distrust of institutions, intolerance of opposing views, and inspiration drawn from the dark corners of the internet are fuelling this new era of politically motivated violence. The motivation for Kirk’s killer remains unknown, but his assassination has already become a symbol of the risks facing a generation of leaders shaped in the online era.

“I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah,” Mr Trump said.

“This is a dark moment for America.”
