CBS stations across the country are dedicating a day to telling stories about Americans finding common ground. We're calling this series of reports "Unifying America." CBS2's Aundrea Cline-Thomas introduces us to an organization filling in those empty spaces when people have nowhere else to turn.

The murder of prominent conservative commentator Charlie Kirk is a dangerous moment for America, which is free-falling into a tragic cycle of violent political populism. The disgraceful killing of the 31-year-old, as he debated his views on a university campus, is the latest example of how civic norms around political debate in the US have collapsed.

A politically polarised and heavily armed America is proving to be a deadly combination — distrust of institutions, intolerance of opposing views, and inspiration drawn from the dark corners of the internet are fuelling this new era of politically motivated violence. The motivation for Kirk’s killer remains unknown, but his assassination has already become a symbol of the risks facing a generation of leaders shaped in the online era.

The Australian’s Chief International Correspondent, Cameron Stewart and Editorial Director Claire Harvey, also host of The Front, analyse what Charlie Kirk’s killing means for American politics, and what it reveals about the dangerous future of democracy in the United States.

Ben Shapiro reflected on his 13-year friendship with Bill Maher's show after the shocking death.

Shapiro claimed that Kirk's assassin was likely politically a leftist, which caused Maher to react emotionally.

He said, “If it is a shooting of a Republican politician, it is very likely to be a Trans, ANTIFA, Marxist shooter.”
