The US right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk has died after being shot at a university campus speaking event in the state of Utah.

Kirk who was 31, was an influential ally of President Donald Trump and was known for holding open-air debates on campuses across the country.

Students described how Kirk had taken questions on shooting incidents as well as on religion and LGBT issues before the shooting. The university says a shot was fired from around 200 meters from where Kirk was speaking.

Video from the scene shows people rushing to flee after the shooting. A suspect was taken into custody but later released. It appears that the gunman remains at large.

President Trump posted on his Truth Social website: “ The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead.”

A wife weeping with head bent over husband's open casket - the soul-wrenching picture was shared by Charlie Kirk's wife, Erika, on social media on Friday. In an obituary for her husband, Erika shared a series of pictures and videos from the final goodbye, in which she can be seen crying and rubbing, kissing and holding Charlie's hand for the one last time.

Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and US President Donald Trump aide, was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested as a suspect in the murder of Mr Kirk.

The FBI said Thursday it has recovered what is believed to be the weapon used in the deadly shooting of Charlie Kirk.

The spent cartridge was still chambered and three unspent cartridges contained wording on them expressing what some law enforcement officials described as "transgender and anti-fascist" writing, according to preliminary information shared with agencies. It's unclear what that means and authorities are still working to determine the meaning or whether the markings were intended as misdirection for investigators.

In the seconds after a bullet penetrated the neck of 31-year-old Charlie Kirk, a lone figure moves across the rooftops in the distance.

As crowds dispersed in panic, the figure, who some footage from the scene had shown lying down moments before, can be seen staggering across the Losee Centre some 130 metres away.

The rooftop position on top of a three-storey building is one of the few vantage points with a clear line of sight at Kirk, the de facto leader of the Maga youth movement and fierce defender of Donald Trump.

The precise details of the shooting remain unknown. However, some experts believe that footage from the scene shows a carefully planned and calculated assassination.
