James O'Brien reacts to the death of conservative influencer and Trump ally, Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead on a university campus in Utah.

The father-of-two, 31, was responding to a question from an audience member about mass shootings when a shot rang out. A single bullet then hit him in the throat.

He was pronounced dead in hospital around an hour later after being taken away by car.

James O'Brien says he feels 'completely ignorant' for not having realised how popular Charlie Kirk was within conservative circles.

Responding to the conservative activist's death, Donald Trump has vowed to crackdown on political violence.

O'Brien, however, expresses surprise at the speed with which many are drawing sweeping conclusions about the motive behind the killing, noting that it remains unclear whether the attack was politically motivated.

Charlie Kirk’s assassination has turned into something far bigger than a single act of violence. What began as a shocking shooting on a university stage has become a mirror of America’s deepest divides. On the Right, Kirk is being canonized as a martyr, a symbol of Christianity, conservative values, and the fight against “woke ideology.” His death has been seized upon by Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Republican leaders to frame the Left as responsible for fostering a toxic culture of hate. On the Left, leaders condemned the killing but warn that conservatives are weaponizing grief to silence dissent, punish speech, and harden partisan lines. Already, employees across universities, corporations, and even the Secret Service have been suspended or fired for posts seen as mocking Kirk’s death. The country is now teetering between two realities: grief turning into vengeance, or grief crystalizing into policy - from abortion and immigration to Christian nationalism. Israel’s prime minister has said the visit to Jerusalem by the US secretary of state is a clear message that America stands with Israel.

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and America “stood together in the face of terror” in what he called the “incredible lies directed at Israel”.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Hamas needed to “cease to exist”, and urged Qatar to continue to play a constructive role on Gaza.

The meeting between Rubio and Netanyahu comes as Arab leaders hold a summit in a show of support for Qatar following last week’s attack from Israel.

The strike on Qatar, which the IDF said targeted senior Hamas leaders, drew international outrage and was criticised by President Donald Trump.

In response to a question from the BBC about whether Israel's strike had damaged US relations in the region, Rubio said Washington maintained "strong relationships with our Gulf allies".
